Boost for UK EV Drivers: £185m in New Charge Point Funding

Dedicated government support makes switching to electric vehicles more accessible with expanded charging infrastructure.

Expanding Charging Networks Across the UK

The UK government is driving forward the electric vehicle adoption with a wave of new funding initiatives. A total of 44 councils across England are now set to benefit from their share of £185 million as part of the Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund. This will help them install thousands of new charge points, making it easier for residents to switch from petrol and diesel cars to cleaner electric alternatives. This push extends beyond this initial funding, with additional rounds opening applications to councils on April 2nd, further accelerating EV adoption.

No Driveway? No Problem!

In a move that significantly widens EV access, the government is extending the electric vehicle charge point grant to those without driveways or dedicated parking spaces. This aligns with the Plan for Drivers, providing up to £350 off the cost of purchasing and installing a street-side charge point, making EV ownership a reality for more people than ever before. To apply for the grant, residents need to have permission from their local council, ensuring a smooth process.

Transforming the Electric Landscape

The results of this investment are already visible. Over 56,000 public charge points are now installed across the UK – an impressive 47% increase compared to this time last year. This number will continue to climb with targeted initiatives like LEVI in place.

“This government has a plan to help speed up the installation of EV charge points, which we’re getting on and delivering,” emphasizes Technology and Decarbonisation Minister, Anthony Browne. “This dedicated funding to local councils is part of our plan to ensure people can switch from a petrol or diesel car to an EV when they choose to do so.”

Building the Charge Point Infrastructure for Success

To further support this transformation, the government is launching a dedicated electric vehicle infrastructure training course for local authorities, covering topics from technology to procurement. Funding from the LEVI scheme has already helped place around 150 specialized EV officers in councils to aid in charge point planning and delivery, ensuring efficient rollout.

Collaboration for a Greener Future

Alongside these initiatives, the newly launched Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Forum brings together government and industry leaders to accelerate the delivery of EV charging infrastructure. Chaired by ministers and AA President Edmund King OBE, the forum will address common barriers to ensure a smooth transition.

“AA surveys show that one of the main reasons why many drivers are hesitant towards switching to EVs is the perception that there are not enough charging points,” states Edmund King. “To give confidence to drivers now and for the future, we need to overcome these barriers… Extending grants to those without off-street parking is a step in the right direction.”

Why the UK is Going Electric

The UK’s commitment to electric vehicles is more than just about the environment. It’s about future-proofing transportation. Fully electric vehicles now account for over 16% of the new car market in 2023, showing a strong upward trend. Government and industry are working to rapidly install the charging infrastructure needed to support this growth.

This momentum is further underscored by the introduction of the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate into law earlier this year. This ambitious regulatory framework requires 80% of new cars and 70% of new vans sold in Great Britain to be zero emission by 2030, and 100% by 2035. This move not only secures a greener future, but also prioritizes innovation and safeguards skilled jobs within the UK’s automotive sector.
